Liposomal Vitamin C
Why should I think about taking a vitamin C supplement?
Vitamin C must be obtained through our diet, unlink many animals we can’t manufacture our own in our bodies. (Did you know, chimpanzees and Guinea Pigs can’t either?) It is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that we can’t store it in the body and any excess is flushed out.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are valuable sources, but it is also easily destroyed by heat and light. If you are prone to boiling your vegetables to within an inch of collapse, you will have also destroyed all the vitamin C.
Absorption.
The body can usually absorb a maximum of around 200mg at any one time, meaning that for best absorption, we need to take small amounts and take them often. This is why you often hear people talking about high dose supplements producing ‘expensive urine.’ What isn’t absorbed, is flushed out of the body.
Up until recently, this has been the case with many high strength supplements. It was hard to get the right amount into the body and to the cells where it can be utilised. Liposomal technology is changing all this!
In short, putting vitamin C into a liposomal form allows it to be easily absorbed and get to the sites in the body where it can be fully utilised. It presents us with a revolution in the way our bodies can use this water-soluble vitamin.
What is a liposome?
A liposome is a tiny bubble that protects the nutrients inside a protective membrane. The big advantage is that they are similar in structure to your own cell membranes as they have bi-layers (two layers) of phospholipid molecules that enclose the nutrient and protect it from the harsh environment of the digestive tract. The liposomes then carry the nutrient into the cell where it can be used effectively.
The liposomal delivery system protects the vitamin C from damage and degradation once it enters the digestive tract, this results in a much higher level of bioavailability than an regular vitamin C supplement.
Digestion.
It is also less irritating on the digestive system than large amounts of regular ascorbic acid. So for those that find they get intestinal discomfort from taking higher strength tablets, they will find that liposomal vitamin C is more suitable.
First class delivery.
In short, putting vitamin C into a liposomal form is like wrapping up a parcel for safe delivery. It is taking the nutrient through the harsh digestive tract and allowing the body to deliver it to the cell where it can then be used effectively by the cells. Better absorption, better utilisation.
The future.
There has already been a great number of studies showing the benefits of using liposomal technology to deliver nutrients. This can only increase as scientists and nutritionists begin the see the benefits of this revolutionary delivery system.
